Writers advice sources tend to agree on one thing: reading helps writing. If you are reading a book at the moment, re-read the last event captured in it with a more analytical mind than for entertainment. What was the style like? What were the genres? What tools did the author use (alliteration, assonance, metaphor, simile, etc., etc.)?
Write
Mimic that style/story in a short writing that could fit into that book. For instance, if you've just read about Alice in the wonderland courtroom, write about the next defendant's trial. Try to ape the style and voice of the original author.
OR
Write an alternative version of the same story with your style and crafting. A re-telling of the same event from your pen, not the original author's.
