When I'm reading, I prefer shorter chapters. They give me built-in stopping points for when I put it aside until tomorrow. Even when I'm reading short story collections, I tend to read the shorter pieces first.
I didn't really think about chapters when I tried NaNo for the first time last year. It was such a bouncy novel that page breaks would have made more sense than chapters.
This year, one of my options can have clearly defined chapters, based on which character each chapter is focusing on. And the other option I'm considering is more linear in plot, so I guess that can lend itself to chapters too.
I guess, in a vacuum, 20 would be a good number for chapters in a 50K-word novel.
