Are you talking about the Instant Message system or Chat? If you're talking about chat, there is a way to set sounds. You can go into the Settings area (the little cog wheel on the top right area) and there will be a way to set it so that you can hear a sound when you get a Private Message, or when there are Public Messages, or when someone enters the room.
