I guess even if I don't particularly like a piece of poetry that I am reading, sometimes, and surprisingly, there may still be parts of it that I feel connected to, and then I am truly impressed. You wouldn't think that could happen, would you? But it does, and I've had it happen to me. So poetry that you don't like can also move you. I think that like art, the beauty of poetry can possibly be in the eye of the beholder.
Speaking of contemporary art museums, I prefer the art of DaVinci, Monet, Rembrandt -- you can obviously see where I am going with this -- but just a couple weeks ago my two daughters (home from college) brought my husband and I to an art museum in the cities which had a contemporary art exhibit. I really didn't think I would enjoy it, but I was pleasantly surprised. There were pieces that moved me. I was thrilled that I went.
What I'm trying to say is that you really have to give any kind of art, including poetry, a chance. Try it out, see if you like it. You may be surprised. It may not be "bad" poetry after all.
