No absolutely not! I doubt that there is a single good answer to this question. In fact, I’m not even sure that Diana Mehta’s verdict is definitive either. I mean, we’ve all had our own unique and individual experiences in life, we also have our own tastes: things we admire and things we don’t. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve read a poem on this site, and in my mind have brushed it off as something that wasn’t a favourite, only to find dozens of highly positive reviews for it from other members. And only then do I feel impelled to go back and read it again. Sometimes I like it more, sometimes I like it just the same as I first did. I feel that makes me rubbish at being able to tell a good poem from an ordinary one, however, somebody else’s opinion can’t become my own, not without my being insincere about it. I didn’t “click” with it, so does that mean it is an automatically bad poem? That might be my truth, but it may not be for somebody else! Another thing is that poetry, which pushes the boundary on conventional forms, will always be rejected by some people. Same goes for many other things! There are those who gain recognition for their art form decades after their time. What did we know later that we hadn’t known back then, even amongst the experts?? Actually, I do think that Mehta was right in many respects; poetry (or art of any kind) can’t be calculated in order to find an overall value. So skill and technique alone is only half the story. I often think that poetry which leaves me with a lasting sensation, regardless of whether I thought it was good at the time, is almost certainly a high calibre write. I think that poetry, no matter how it is written, needs to somehow transcend that divide between what is said on the page, and what it actually says to your inner being, and I believe that happens on an individual basis. Perhaps there’s no such thing as bad poetry, so long as at least one person truly likes it. ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** Please check out my wonderful Rising Star sponsor: aardvarkbark ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** |
