The characters with the exception of Kirk, Spock and Uhora were extremely one dimensional and the only reason they were even there was to give a line that was reminisent of the old Star Trek to try and reel an old fan base in. The generation gap let's change it all round and make the crew all closer in age... even so using "artistic license"? Honestly how is a CADET who isn't even supposed to be on the ship given command when the Captain (who is seemingly the only senior bridge officer on the ship) is gone. Where are the other members of the bridge crew? Are you trying to tell me the Federation in the reimagined Star Trek send out every new ship with a nearly completely rookie crew? Look at any naval vessel put out to sea and ask the Navy if they would launch a ship with all midshipmen straight from the academy. They would laugh. Sure this isn't real life and it's fiction, but we don't want the Federation to be led by the good ship lollipop do we? Sure in the Wrath of Khan the Enterprise had a large number of trainee's but there were plenty of old hands on board too (namely the original crew by that point all experienced Star Fleet officers)

The destruction of Vulcan wasn't a bad idea, I have no problem with new storylines, but you have to take care of the basics. We could have joined a Lieutenant Kirk onboard a a ship where Lieutenant Commander Spock was his superior, McCoy was Kirks friend a Lieutenant Sick Bay late night shift bottom of the totem pole MD and possibly even a young Scotty as an officer serving in Engineering on another ship they interact with, saving Sulu Chekov and Uhora for sequals. A different female lead could have been used as a love interest for Spock, a love interest unlike Uhora, could be killed tragically without damaging the Uhora character for the long term. That's just a hastily set up scenario without great thought put into it, you can't tell me they can't do better making millon dollar movies sitting at the script round table discussing the story?

It's not just the Star Trek movie that has suffered this fate, Hollywood has taken to using special effects and sex to sell movies and the stories themselves are so often lacking that it's disgusting.
