Characters were one-dimensional? And here I noticed everybody was talking about the supporting cast, not Spock or Kirk (who appeared quite developed to me) Please show me one episode in OTS or film in the Trek franchise where everybody isn't one-dimensional. That is exactly what these characters are. The fact that in one episode a character shows an interesting trait isn't depth... if he is back to his one-dimension in the next episode. In fact I think the entirety of Trek (perhaps except for DS9) is formed around classic archetypes. Sometimes these change... into a different archetype. However, please don't confuse deep and multi-layered characters with Star Trek. When a movie needs to be criticised, this is now suddenly being complained about? Or will somebody try to tell me that Chekov is anything more than a Russian from the POV of somebody who has probably never met one in his life? (Please keep in mind that I do like the series as well as the film) The point is that in one case this appeals to you (or perhaps you don't agree with what I'm saying here and think ST characters are very multi-dimensional and quite difficult to predict etc.) and in another it is a terrible injustice. People have put ST:TOS up on a pedestal (and as I have said in the previous post) are starting to confuse their idealized views, or the views and philosophies of Gene with Star Trek. Something very similar can be said about the Star Wars films and prequels. Yes, it isn't a perfect comparison, but I'd much rather listen to those that systematically describe what they didn't like about the prequels, rather than those that are somehow comparing the new films which just didn't hit the spot for them to their nostalgic memory of seeing the original films in their early teens in the 70-80s... I can hardly claim to be objective, but sometimes it is better to step back and think whether it isn't just "I just didn't like the movie" than... "they made this movie badly"... there is a big difference. I challenge anyone who thinks they could do it better. (Ok, true, I am sure somebody somewhere could... but we could be waiting for tha tforever... or perhaps the people that could have no interest in trek, or are dead already and so on... but relax guys. This movie is great news for us. It keeps trek going. ) I always think of it this way. Would you rather have 1 good season of a series or that same season and 10 more which are worse (in your opinion, for others they could be better)... the second right? You can always choose not to watch... This movie means there is a future... one that really would be bad could mean the end. And believe me, if some people got their wish, I am pretty sure that would be the case. |
