Welcome to our coffee lounge Wow! What a question to open with. I have to say though, I felt exactly the same as you when I joined last August. I was almost intimidated by the standards I saw, and I can't quite believe just how much WDC has helped me improve my writing.
Personally, I would have to say that reading & reviewing other people's work has helped me a a tonne. It helped me to build a mental image of what works in a piece of writing and what doesn't - even if I didn't have the terminology to describe what I liked or disliked, I could certainly feel what it was. Over time, it also gave me a frame of reference against which I could assess my own work too.
Other than that, the one piece of advice which I've regularly seen offered is to write as often as you can. It doesn't matter if it isn't the perfect piece this time around...it's one more step on the road towards it.
I look forward to crossing paths again soon, but in the meantime if you have any questions, please just shout!
