In order to have an image file of any kind in your portfolio, you need to have an upgraded account. I would imagine that there's no distinction between unobtrusive image files and other kinds of image files because it can be seen as a subjective quality, and also, it's probably easier to implement a blanket "images are only for upgraded members" rule than it is to manually check all images that every member uploads to see if they're unobtrusive enough.
