Really, when I was told this, I just about wanted to slap her. I was flabbergasted. It blew my mind that she honestly felt that sf was nothing more than putting a flying saucer, horror is nothing more than an ax murder, and fantasy, just slap in a wizard.

Yes you have to have the same stuff a slice of life does.

Now mix in whatever you are writing: first, fantasy, sf, dark, supernatural, or horror? Then add if it steampunk or spatterpunk, cyberpunk. Then make your own world and characters. Magic does work the same for each arthur.

If you have a purple sky, you should know why you have a purple sky. What affect does this have on flora and fauna and what affects does it have on culture in which your story takes places.
