Yes, this is a good idea... except for the factor of "themes". I just tried this again, but I had forgot about themes too. With themes, the colors over there and all around the site are different for everyone. We don't actually set that red or blue for the new updates, your theme determines the color.

Basically the themes were only setup with two link colors... so it's usually link color #1 and then when there's something new, it's link color #2. For you, link color #2 is red. For others, link color #1 is red, so we can't just pick an arbitrary color for the links. One of the only real downsides to the theme system. *Wink*

But I'm still not a real fan of how hard they are to tell apart either, so we're still looking at options. Unfortunately, I don't think adding a third link colors to all themes is in the cards, but I'm won't rule it out either. Possibly keeping the link color the same and changing the new window icon to draw attention to it instead. Not sure.
