Thanks Annie/Archie. I've learned loads from October Prep. Mostly I've learned so much about the backgrounds and personalities of my characters that they're starting to seem three-dimensional to me so they're easier to write about. I passed 50K during NaNo 2009 but I was doing seat-of-the-pants writing and I got stuck so many times that, following the advice someone gave about introducing a new character, place or activity, the back half of the novel barely resembles the front half. I had fun writing it and the printout encouraged me to keep going to the end of the month. I need to rewrite it though, to make it coherent and sort out the loose ends in the plot, so I thought I'd read my printout then use the October Prep calendar to redo the plot and characters before I start rewriting. However, I've had a couple of glances at the tasks for the Experimental Plotters and I think that might be better for some other partial novels because a lot of the scenes are already pretty much written and I really need to decide what moves the plot forward and what can be discarded or presented more concisely. I did wonder if one method might be better for one kind of novel than another so I appreciate what you said about the way they fit alongside each other. I'll look out for Madam's next announcement Good luck with NaNo. Cathie/Kath |
