If you temporarily change the title of the private item to the desired message text, it'll show wherever the item is linked on other pages and in favorites. For the larger links and in favorites with the mouse-hover, the Brief Description can be used in the same way for additional information.

While the title space is only 40 characters, that's plenty long enough to say things like Closed till 12/1/11 or Back Dec 1. The 90 characters in the BD allow for more detailed info.
