I often have the same struggle to turn off my inner editor. I search for just the right word, and I don't even have the American/British English struggle.
I find that I struggle most when I'm writing a section of story that I'm not passionate about--a part of the story that has to be written, but that doesn't compel me as much as other parts. When I hit those struggle points, I try to either jump to a piece of the story that does compel me so I can get into the character again, or brainstorm other ways to get the same part of the story told in a way that inspires me more. Sometimes I even end up deciding that I just need to cut a piece out because it really isn't needed.
Good luck to you as you continue on in this challenge! Thank you for sharing--you obviously hit on something many people are feeling. You're not alone. Keep writing!
