It's good to try all of the traditional forms out once, even if you do not plan on writing in a certain form.
I know it helped me. My suggestion is to search for "poetry forms" and read a form - then give it a shot.
I've written in 56 different forms. Remember, free verse is also a form. Starting out, I suggest you stay with shorter poems.
