Well, I guess the question would be; are you trying to be nice or are you doing what's necessary to tell your story. Having someone move halfway across the world and never see their parents again would be a crushing experience. Does your character need to have this happen to grow or mature in some way? Is it an experience that is necessary for their development? Tough call.
