I'd say the wife watching it should go first. The drama of that scene is lost if the reader already knows her husband has escaped. The reader not knowing if he got out mirrors Jess' horror and worry, and then the reader feels the relief of knowing he lived as much as Jess does, making the next chapter becomes a revelation.
