I totally agree with Kate. Even though passivity and stagnation are being forced upon him, it's got to get tough for him. Maybe somehow he breaks through and doesn't remain passive or stagnant. Or maybe he never gets there and they force it upon him through brutality. Maybe he knows the secret to resisting the stagnation...if so, where did he learn the secret? Was he born with it and no one knew? Put him in pain and make him sweat. But like Kate I also feel for him based only on your paragraph. So...good job! But make it tough.
