Re: Outlines: Chronology versus Narrative

Not sure if it's okay for me to interject here, but here I go.

What is the story you want to tell?

Backstory is the set-up for the main story. It is the reasoning, the lead up, the alignment of dominoes. The fun part is when the dominoes start falling.

If want you want to write is the meeting of Kaleb and Molly and the consequences, then put that meeting very close to the beginning of your narrative. Poke the metaphorical dominoes. Hide the dominoes which have not yet fallen, let the reader worry about what they are and what this might mean. Hint at the silhouettes of some of them.

If you write out your backstory at the beginning of your work and then hit the start of your story in the middle of your narrative, you won't necessarily enjoy writing it.

Personally I'm not a fan of flashbacks, but there are other ways to deliver backstory. And if you want to use flashbacks, that's your prerogative :)
