October Novel Prep Challenge

Speaking solely as a lay person, you better have a good reason for him wanting to come back here when he is obviously safer in this other country. Why would anyone want to run to a place where they can not be who they are or live free. The "should he return to the U.S." implies that there are safe places in the world where he can work and live, so why go where he is not wanted? I don't get that.
