October Novel Prep Challenge

So, my first ever novel is going to be fantasy. I love magical/fantasy characters like dragons, mermaids, fairies, elves, ect, and was planning on putting them in my novel. I have two writing buddies on Nano. One of them loves magical creatures as well. The other one told me that instead of using cliched creatures like fairies and elves, I should make my own creatures with their unique attributes and names. The problem is, I'm not that great with coming up with names. (I don't even have my kingdom's name!) I'm also a little bit busy this last week before November with school and attempting to get a head start on projects so I can do less during November. Does anyone have any thoughts regarding the whole new vs old creatures? Thanks!
