I admit that I've not read a ton of it either, but K. W. Jeter coined the term "steampunk," and his book, Infernal Devices (1987), is probably a great place to start. It's about a lazy young man who inherits a clockmaking business, then finds out that clocks were not the only thing made in the shop (and it features fish people, so...).
