I agree with you Matt to a point. If YA are being exposed to violence and sex; we all know the concept of desensitization. Some may say, for instance, that playing Call of Duty incites children and YA to commit the things which they interact with on their TV’s. If the same principal is applied to irrational or real fears in books, children and YA will be desensitized to those fears. Oh, and Hanna, you’re totally on the ball. The trends are one big circle. Like it says in the book of Ecclesiastes-“There is nothing new under the sun.” Pop artists, politics, and the things that are now “All the rage” will go away and be reborn but in a different form. Does anyone feel me?
