There's no such thing a quiet in the hospital room. The air conditioner rumbles steadily, the fan humming a pattern that my ears can't quite catch. There's a low buzz as a machine automatically massages each leg in turn. there's the click of the IV allowing the next drip. There are no monitors in this room, no wires making her heartbeat an alarm, her oxygen levels a continual wave out of the corner of my eye, but in the distance, outside the door, the nurses chat and alarms sound and people run and sirens wail in the street below and from above, a helicopter lands.
