There are now almost a thousand Emoticons. Loading the full list takes an appreciable time on my system. Yet I almost always select from a very small subset (Faces usually). I suspect this is true for the majority of users.
I suggest an option to load Emoticons by selected Category, or perhaps the top 30 most used items, or some variation of same.
Unless, of course, there is already an option to do this!
