I wondered this too and asked over in the technical forum. There is a way to find out about reviews of an item that's not your own.

If you go to Public Reviews (select this from the Community link on the left hand side of the page) you'll find where all the public reviews are listed. In the little search box if you put in the item's number and search, it'll bring back all reviews on the item.

I just tried it with one of my items that I know I've had reviews on, and it brought all six back to me. And tried it with a random item from someone else and it brought back their reviews too.
