Hi there, Rista!

Personally, I generally tend to lean toward topics I have the most experience in, which I think most people do. I read different genres, but I still find it quite challenging to write in genres that are outside my comfort zone. Having said that, I always encourage others to try, myself included*Bigsmile*

Researching things such as dragons and fairies are good idea, but my initial thought is to create a regular character and then maybe add in certain traits that are fairy-like. It may be easier to create your characters that way. Just a suggestion in character building.
