If you type {e: it brings up a short list of emoticons. If you type {e:p it brings up emoticons that start with the letter P.
It doesn't matter if you type {e:Painting} or {e:painting} -- the emoticon will still display properly.
However, if you type {{e:p and select something you don't want, it will capitalize the entry. You have to go all the way back to the beginning, remove the capital P and put in a lowercase p in order to get the prompt functionality back.
In other words, while the editor can interpret upper or lower case, the prompt functionality inside the editor only works with lowercase letters.
