250 GPs were sent to The StoryMistress with this post. Every day I question myself. I question my ability. I knew when I was younger I had talent, a skill for something, but today at 35 - my greatest pastime seems to be convincing myself of my low value. One of the things I've always loved is reading. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of other stuff too but reading has to be the more unusual thing because I don't know... well.. anyone who loves to read as much as I do (in personal day-to-day life). I like movies a lot too but I can happily sit and consume a book over a whole day... I can't focus on any other activity for that long... except perhaps playing computer games before I banned myself from them. I think this lead me to wanting to be a writer. I've tried many things to try and get into, like writing software and apps, electronics, physics, kickboxing, gym, mountain biking, learning languages. I'm currently teaching English in China as my main job which is pretty enjoyable for the now... anyway I never seem to stick at anything. I keep going round and round, doing an average job to pay the bills and trying something in my free time to work towards. It usually dies off after 3 months, and I'll fall back into a less productive routine. I think I'm up to nearly 9 months now with writing (maybe 2 of which are via writing.com). I enjoy writing. I can sit down and whip out a 300 worder for a contest in less than an hour and sometimes win a competition... but now the doubts are coming back. Is writing good enough? Should I be trying to get back into electronics? Should I be trying something else? Doing this? Doing that? It's frankly.. quite maddening. I had this whacky idea once about trying to redevelop Stanley Meyer's Water Fuel Cell, try and save the world from its crazy energy crisis... the ideas that go through this head... Anyway, this is my battle, what's yours? |
