Might I suggest that you consider interviewing your character? By that I mean writing a scene where you are somewhere the character frequents and the character comes to you and you have a conversation. Before they arrive you can take in the surroundings. When they arrive you can write about what they look like, what they are wearing and how they walk but do it as though the character is an old friend. Then just riff a conversation that tells you how they talk, what they think about, who they know are are related too, compaires their home planet to earths. You get the idea. I have found conversing with my fantasy characters makes the whole get to know you phase so much easier.
