But if this was November, we'd place them somewhere uncomfortable so they'd have to react, even if it meant curling up into a ball and sucking their thumbs.

Or if you don't want to start out immediately with torture, interview them - what happened during the course of the story, how did it change you?

Ask your antagonist - why are you the hero of this story?
