Even in third person, the story can be told all from one person's perspective, and in that case, that'd be your main character. Sometimes the story switches perspective with each chapter so you get to see both sides of the story, and in that case, they'd be equal. Does that answer your question or help? I've definitely seen both ways done in romance novels.
