To the best of your ability, stick to the intent of the assignment, but it's okay to be a little flexible. For example, if you already know your protagonist really well, it's okay to profile a minor character instead, so long as it's a significant minor character. But if it's a character profile assignment, then profile a character. If you ever need a second opinion on how to handle a particular assignment, just ask.
