Too bad you and I have never saved any of our conversations in which I've tried to "help" you.
Did you already write the scene? Did it come to you, the things Librarian said? Off the top of my head, since T wants help, and Librarian doesn't truly have help to offer, but Librarian wants to help anyway because he likes T, I would think Librarian would try to steer T away from solving the problem at all (since Librarian thinks the problem is unsolvable.) Something like this:
T: But I want to X-Y-Z.
L: But it's not really possible because reasons.
T: There has to be a way.
L: Have you considered doing A-B-C instead of X-Y-Z?
T: No! Because that's not X-Y-Z. I want to X-Y-Z.
L: Okay, I hear you. What are you trying to accomplish with X-Y-Z? Because maybe you could achieve the same thing with E-F-G, just approaching the problem from a different angle.
