From my experience, when it comes to my issues, I feel safer talking to those who have experienced what I have or similar. Usually those who work at domestic violence centers or rape crisis centers, are survivors themselves. As a matter of fact, if you have had prior personal experience with abuse, these centers are more likely to hire you.
In the past, support groups of fellow survivors were especailly helpful. It sucks that abuse happens to so many, but it is also reassuring that other's have the same struggles and can help with sharing what works for them in the healing process. Plus, there is a special bond when being cheered on by someone who really understands. It just feels more real.
The only professionals that I spoke to that possibly had no experience with abuse was when I was a teen. I found that they were easy to manipulate into thinking I was well.
