A support forum for writers dealing with mental illness |
Support systems offer moments and locations to express thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. At least, that’s the way I hope my support system works. My support system is very basic and includes the local mental health center, therapists, my partner and ME. I feel a minimum of support for my depression and anxiety from family and friends. I think this is because they have negative impressions of what mental illness really is. I think, also, those closest to me don’t understand how depression and anxiety manifest in my life. I feel support from Writing.com and my companions from the Mental Health Writers Alliance when I make the effort to fulfill the monthly tasks and TOTW. After all, we get back in the same measure as we give. Real-time support groups are difficult for me because I have a tendency towards social phobia. However, I have attended a few support groups while hospitalized many years ago. I even facilitated a support group at the mental health center when I worked there. I did find that I, also, benefitted from facilitating the supportive journaling group. As my life has evolved so has my support system changed from one therapist to a full team which includes two doctors (one for mental health and the other for physical health), a hospital, group home and a case manager. Now, happily, I am back to one therapist and one doc. Currently, I wish I felt more support from my biological family, but my adopted family fills in just fine. And, overall, I am satisfied with the structure of my support system. |
