A support forum for writers dealing with mental illness |
Mental Health and Careers What do you think about telling employers about mental health challenges? Is it a good idea or not? Have you ever personally done it? Under what circumstances is it a good idea? When is it a bad idea? My feelings about this are full-blown "don't ask- don't tell"! But, then I read Charlie ~'s response. Charlie, your current intern position has given you a unique perspective and I think you've been quite fortunate to find such a great position with people that understand. Hopefully, after graduation, they offer you a perm position! My experience out in the work-force has been different. Thinking back over the jobs I have had, I am so glad I never told anyone anything about my mental health. One particular job I had, that I really loved and was doing very well at - did not welcome me back after a brief hospitalization for depression. I returned to work to find my desk packed up "for me". Oh well. In my experience, most jobs allow you vacation time and a certain number of sick days per year. Once you have used that up, they kinda frown on people talking off for illness or family issues. I had one job that made it difficult to use the sick/vacation days that I was supposed to have! So, in my opinion, I guess I'd have to keep my original stand, "don't ask - don't tell." Good topic! I'm looking forward to reading everyone else's opinions on this! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "Christmas in July Poetry Contest" ![]() Need a C-Note?
