Personally, I don't share with my employer that I'm depressed. However, the subject has come up amongst my previous boss and I didn't hesitate to share with her about my depression. But I haven't been in a situation where I've wanted to share with my current boss. I think it's a good idea but I don't know that the employer would favor that thought as well. I've only been working for this new person for about nine months. I'm not ready to say anything to her. Only one of my coworkers knows and that's because she's also depressed. We've talked on many occasions. My depression doesn't necessarily hinder my work. I rarely call off due to illness, but there are times I have better days than others. I have to make myself get up every morning and go to work. I'd prefer to sit on the couch with my computer or sleep.
I don't mind discussing depression, but I do believe there's still a stigma surrounding mental health issues and I feel more comfortable with not sharing with my boss right now.
