I'm sort of leary about self-help books, especially those about marriage or parenting. The worst one I ever read was a book titled How to be the Wife of a Happy Husband. It was written by some conservative Christian woman. It pretty much displayed ideals from the 1950's and described how to manipulate my husband through sex. Horrible book! I was young and in my early 20's when some woman gave it to me, pretty much letting me know the issues in my marriage were my fault. I was in an abusive marriage, so there was a lot of victim blame for me in that book.
The books resembling self-help that I find relevant are those on meditation and Yoga. Other than that, I've never read any that I'd consider particularly helpful.
