Community Recognition
by Stumpy Author IconMail Icon
It appears this failed to post. If it did post, but was pulled, my apologies.

This might fall into the "WDC Policy" space, but I think it's worth mentioning.

I find the "Community Recognitions" rather unhelpful as they currently stand.

Looking at my own CR count, the things that actually make me a better site citizen are completely swamped by the 5 bonus points per year of membership.

I visit the site in bursts, separated by months or years. When I'm here, I am an active reviewer and I feel that should count for something. Joining groups, entering contests and just plain writing should all count for some form of recognition. Not cancelling my account for a year really shouldn't count for much, if anything at all.

The site is 18 years old this month. That means there are presumably accounts out there that have accumulated 85 to 90 "Community Recognition" points just from having been created in the first days of the site, some of which may never have been visited again. Many accounts I see on my travels through the site have just 1 CR point, even though they may have a portfolio full of content and contest entries and a list of reviews.

I'm not too fussed about status-building myself, but it does seem odd that a relatively new, but highly active member should have a lower CR score than someone who signed up 18 years ago and then never came back.

I would suggest something like:

Account age: 1 per year
Authored 1 item: 1
Authored 10 items: 1
Authored 100 items: 1
Authored 1000 items: 1
Reviewed 1 item: 1
Reviewed 10 items: 1
Reviewed 10 authors: 2 + 1 for every additional 10 authors
Reviewed 100 items: 5 per 100 items
Group membership: 1 per group
Entered a contest: 1 per contest (as in, Daily Flash once or more = 1 point; Writer's Cramp once or more = 1 point, etc.)
And then the 1 point per Award Icon, etc. as currently stands.

I think that would give me about 35 points, compared to the 40 I have now, 35 of which are for longevity, most of which was meaningless.
