Funny, I have never thought of religion affecting one's mental health. I went to a catholic school as a child, because my Mum was raised catholic - although at that time she was already having doubts. I didn't mind being in a catholic school, I liked singing and playing guitar and reading stuff out in Church as far as I remember. I went to a regular secondary school then. Now I'd say I'm agnostic. My Mum is a strict atheist. I don't believe religion has had any effect on my mental health. I don't believe my issues really started until I was in secondary school in any case, as is common with depressive disorders. I would imagine if people are religious, this would aide them when feeling depressed etc. However I don't know, because I'm not them......
