Thanks, Angela! That actually makes a lot of sense. I'm actively going to read any responses to this TotW because having BPD, I have absolutely no sense of self. I don't know what's "me" and what's my disorder. It's very unstable.
When you said the magic words "interferes with daily life" that made sense to me. I've seen people on various forms of social media and online forums saying things like, "Ohh, that's what OCD is? I think I have that!" based on, like, a picture of an organized closet. I can see where people see aspects of their personality in various mental health issues.
Does a characteristic have to be upsetting in order to switch over to "mental illness" territory? For example, if someone is pretty "organized" in a way that causes them to clean or obsessively organize things for hours each day- but it doesn't upset or bother them at all- is it in the personality trait category or the mental illness category?
