A support forum for writers dealing with mental illness |
I haven’t noticed, no, and, warning(!) this is not gonna be a complete answer to all the questions, but more my opinion and what I’ve noticed. ![]() To spring off my first point, no I haven’t noticed. BUT when you mention it, yes, that really is the case. I study education and stud(ied) psychology briefly in university. Kids nowadays are getting exposed to pop culture earlier and earlier. If what the study says is really the case, is it really a wonder that we all grow up to have mental health issues?! We listen to all this angry, sad, revenge-y stuff, and then internalize it. As we go through life, it’s going to affect us more. As kids grow up, they’re gonna be relying more on their foundations- what they did in early childhood. And if what we’re giving kids to watch nowadays is all these superhero stuff, fighting and explosions, what do you think they’ll find normal when they grow up? Fighting, and explosions. Same goes with music. I watched a Video recently from the cast of Disney’s Descendants movie- these girls, couldn’t be over 7, were singing the lyrics to a song called “Rotten to the Core” ![]() ![]() I mean, media has such a large impact on people- TV, movies, music, books. I honestly hesitate to say books because TV, movies and music all have that audio portion to them. While books do, too, I think most people buy kid-appropriate books, but not necessarily TV, movies, and music. Plus those three types of media are most typically just “on” as mindless entertainment. And usually it’s mindless for the adults, but kids are drawn to the screen and the audio components so they soak it in.... So yeah, if lyrics are getting angrier and sadder, is it really any wonder that people are, too? ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** Think you can write for teens?
