What is loneliness?
It is an epidemic!
Is it being alone?
I admit to being somewhat of an introvert, so being alone doesn't always make me feel lonely. Sometimes, I log into Facebook two or three times a day, but at other times I don't log in at all. When I am on Facebook I look at the posts of people who I have something in common with, or are friends and family. I will accept friend requests of people I haven't met in person, if I check them out first. When I friend people I haven't met in person, they are Baha'is located in another part of the world.
From my experience, loneliness is caused by feeling like an outcast or outsider. I know in my teenage and young adult years, I felt like an outsider and that feeling caused me to experience loneliness. I'm not sure what other things cause loneliness. The only time I feel loneliness now is when I feel like an outsider, which is seldom. Even though I have little in common--except that we are all human beings--with the people where I live, I don't feel lonely (at least most of the time).
