I read about your setback and commented, in your reply you said you couldn't miss your niece's birthday. I agree it wouldn't be fair to hurt her. I guess you will have to grin and bear it and attend the family events. Try not to dwell on the conversation - your mother is toxic. Don't give her the power to screw up your life.
