With this woman, I've had to actually learn to be more stern. Actually, I was advised to be so by the charge nurse. When she is being abusive, I am not to do extra stuff she can do herself (She wants attention, so pretends to be unable to do some things, like blowing her own nose and feeding herself) Also, if she is throwing tantrums, her door is to be kept closed. Yesterday, this actually worked. She doesn't like her door closed, so I told her if she is screaming she upsets all other patients, so her door would be closed. Realizing this, she stopped throwing tantrums. Yesterday, I was feeling like total crap and actually had pneumonia without realizing it, so dealing with her was especially frustrating. She decided she didn't want to wear her briefs yesterday, so kept taking them off. The result is that she would piss and shit all over her linen and I'd have to change the whole bed. Since she can't get out of the bed without a special lift, I have to change her sheets with her in it, which is more time consuming, not to mention hard on my own muscles because she is like over 300 lbs. At least the drawsheet helps with maneuvering her from side to side while I change her sheets. I'd totally love it if she'd let us get her out of her bed and I had to push her some in a chair. She'd be a lot happier if she'd get out of that bed, hence I assume much easier to deal with. But, she claims to be afraid of the lift and refuses to let us.
