I would never leave them in their excrement. It is actually dangerous to do that. The more skin breaks down, the harder it is to repair. If I see any redness, I always call in the charge nurse to look at it and get medicine for it. If I see any skin tears, I get wound repair to handle it.
Here in my area, we have ombudsmen, which are advocates for those in nursing homes. They are not associated with the home itself, so their sole responsibility is to the patients. If abuse is found, for which I am responsible, then I would face jail time. Intentionally letting someone stay in their excrement for the longevity of time, especially long enough to break down their skin, would be considered abuse.
