I sort of took the quotes the same way as you. I thought it was referring more to, like, you have to take care of yourself first and, by doing that, you'll be taking care of those who love you. Like, I'm almost positive Kira would rather me take care of myself for her (and her do the same) than to have the traditional, "You take care of me; I'll take care of you" thing.
Like, that's such an outdated and unfair exchange when I'm extraordinarily difficult and she's only mildly difficult on occasion.
