I absolutely agree with your statement that the only way to truly succeed at self care is to be doing it for yourself. If you’re doing it for someone else, I believe you’re eventually going to fail at it because your heart isn’t in it. Your heart may be in making that other person happy, but it’s not in taking care of yourself and making yourself happy, which often isn’t exactly the same thing as making the other person happy.
I do, however, see your point about how when taking care of yourself for you, you’re sometimes doing that specifically so that you can be a better person for those around you. I think that’s different from saying you’re doing it for someone else though. Wanting to be a better person, versus wanting to please a specific person seems to be the difference to me. So, I still disagree with the quote, but I agree that self care can be used in the service of others.
