I agree with your view that the quality of a memoir depends on the author, and I do tend to read a bit into the book in order to see if I will find it interesting or exploitative/self-indulgent. I have even read some books that were classified as "Self-Help" which seemed more exploitative than helpful.
I applaud you and anyone else who is brave enough to tell their story to the world, in any form. Sometimes, I'd like to be - but I think it better that I stay a wallflower, so as to not bring undue attention to other wallflowers who I have interacted with through the years. And there are always going to be things I don't want the world to know about me.
I'd also like to read some memoirs from drag queens. I have had quite a few of them as friends over the years. In fact, about 25 years ago, many would come to me for their lingerie needs before a show. It was fun, helping them, and I was able to see some of their performances, which were amazing.
